NOTE: Caulfield (Blue Sapphire Stks meeting) Wednesday, for G1 subscribers, will have top-rated runners and selections for all eight races so keep an eye on your in-box.
SUMMARY OF LAST WEEK:
Racing was at CAULFIELD on Saturday for Guineas Day, the track was GOOD, the rail was TRUE. It was no disadvantage being on the speed, in fact, nine of the ten winners either led, or were within 3L of the lead on the turn, the exception was HOSTING who cam from last off a suicidal tempo! Plenty of placegetters ran on from the back. Doubt hard on inside rail was the A-ground late in the day too.
RUN OF THE DAY:
Look, it was RICH ENUFF clearly but he wins it every time he races so going to share the love this week, honorable mention to ALMA’S FURY but the major price is going to AKAVOROUN who was posted wide no cover just off the strong speed in G1 Toorak and spotted the winner 2L turning, he had the toughest run of any runner yet ran winner to 1L on the wire, huge effort!
Said winner was, of course, TRUST IN A GUST who did a mighty job himself considering he chased a strong 47.99 1st-800m, took over a way out and was there to be run over, yet, he was as strong as any of them on/over the wire, outside of he (and AKAVOROUN) it was a run-ons race: SPEEDINESS (back to best/ ran home hard – his 11.94 last 200m was equal-second-quickest); DESERT JEUNEY (so ready to win right race); RHYTHM TO SPARE (cold ride/ home race-fastest 11.8 last 200m after racing tight more than once, good!); BULL POINT stayed hard on inside rail (it’s now Race 7 – maybe that was not the best ground?) and still had an 11.94 late split (eq-2nd-fastest). GUEST OF HONOUR was home OK with his 58kg at the Oz debut. Time: 1-35.2
To the G1 Caulfield Guineas and the speed/pressure was right on! RICH ENUFF led them in 47.69 1st-800m (so would have led the fillies 9L with 600m to go, and, would have led the G1 Toorak around 1.5L too!), he overraced today and was pressured a long way out by ALMALAD (who dropped out) before kicking strongly on that (slower?) inside rail, he just had no juice left to fight off SHOOTING TO WIN who had the nice trial off all the speed/pressure, still, he had to be good run down a freak and he was strong at the 1600m, he ran fast overall time 1-35.58 so only a few ticks below the G1 Toorak. WANDJINA (where were you last week?) was the best of the closers running race-fastest 23.57/ 12.11 last 400/200m and KUMAON kept closing, he was on the winner’s back on the home turn though. CHIVALRY (sound finale) was next from MERION who was enormous, see forgive file! Great race!!
The Fillies G1 (Thousand Guineas) did not rate anywhere near aswell, they went out slow (49.21 1st-800m) and ran 1-36.46. No surprise it was on-pace dominated, in fact, the first three at the 1200m ran the trifecta, AMICUS sat 2nd and responded well to riding to score, she is tough, genuine and has a nice touch of quality, she beat leader TRAVESTON GIRL who did fight. SABATINI was a sound/ every chance third. BRING ME THE MAID loomed a bit but laid-in which did not help, she was sound. TAHNI DANCER jumping 1200-to-1600m into a G1 worked home well, only LUMOSTY had a quicker last 400m split. GO INDY GO (warmed-up late but tempo gave her no hope) and LUMOSTY was a clear forgive file member too…
The other G1 was the Caulfield Stks and FAWKNER had the good run, he pounced at the right time and scored in 2-01.68 off the even 1-15.13 1st-1200m. CRITERION closed in strongly, his 11.34 last 200m was 2nd-fastest of any runner all-day and he bettered the split of SACRED FALLS (11.44) who had a very ”cold” first 1600m so plenty of merit. SIDE GLANCE led (see early split) and just held SACRED FALLS for that third prize, the latter did charge late. HAPPY TRAILS kept finding the line, he was solid, but a few were better. DEAR DEMI looked every hope but may want 2400m now. SERTORIUS sure does, and a handicap!
The G2 Herbert Power was Race 5 and it was a serious staying test! The ran along in 1-14.39 1st-1200m and leader BONFIRE revved things up 700m from home so there were very few ”cheap” sectionals here. BIG MEMORY had the good run, he did not handle the home turn well but clearly held SIGNOFF who had his chance. LET’S MAKE ADEAL ran home hard at big odds. Import PERFECTIONIST ran a ripper with his 59kg, well back and hampered key stage, he saw daylight and charged home nearer the inside, his 11.63 late split was clearly the fastest of the race, another import LORD VAN PERCY had second-quickest, 11.63, late split and was sound. ALBONETTI ran home well at his first go 2400m, he’ll be better for that. SANGSTER was pathetic. Time: 2.26.68. Record here is 2-25.32 and that was (obviously) a Caulfield Cup (fast-run – won by Diatribe).
Better mention Race 4 and RUBICK, he did not go as hard as many thought but 34.2 1st-600m is not pedestrian. He kicked strong and ran fast 56.6 overall time, that was .71 off the track record. PLATELET is a ripper, she hit the line hard for second after having the rails trail. OVERREACH lasted for third and gave her all, she has not grown much though. ICONIC rattled home 22.01 and 11.26 both the fastest closing splits all day.
THE FORGIVE FILE:
TRENCH FIGHTER (blew start/ good), STYLISH ASSASSIN (plays up pre-race/ sat wide), SETHELO (never on track), SILVERSANDS (internal bleed), SISTINE DEMON (led in sub-47 1st-800m/ interan bleed), TURQUISE KING (only clear when race was over), ALMA’S FURY (wide on hot speed/ excellent!), NOT LISTENIN’TOME (slow recovery), DISSIDENT (bled/ 2000m still a mystery), CRACKERJACK KING (lame), SOLICIT (lame), ATLANTE (back/ very wide!), ARABIAN GOLD (had to be amiss?), GO INDY GO (mentioned) and LUMOSTY (blew start/ last/ on-pace race), MERION (hung off track/ still hit line! Very good), LOOKS LIKE THE CAT (wide/ sore), ZEBULON (sore), FARE WELL (stays hard inside) and GIG (too wide).
In Sydney racing was at RANDWICK on GOOD track, Rail was 3m. Track played fast. All winners either led or were close to the speed bar HAMPTON COURT who sat back off the ridiculous speed, and that race was 2000m. Safe to say, on-pace runners had strong advantage today!
RUN OF THE DAY:
Runners-up this week were LANDLOCKED and NEENA ROCK but giving major nod to TELEPATHIC who was terrific running on fresh-up (off lovely trial) behind in-form BOSS LANE who is handy, and was up on speed! She’ll get further TELEPATHIC and first few here beat the others clearly…
… Winner BOSS LANE is flying and building a great record on dry tracks. ATMOSPHERICAL led the winner (35.5 1st-600m) and held 3rd to TUBULENT JET who ran home OK against the pattern fresh-up, he too trialled well prior. LAW is all yours. Time: 1-9.55
Back to Race 7 and NEENA ROCK produced an excellent performance given she was skittled on the home turn, balanced-up and ran down ESTONIAN PRINCESS who had led, on on-pacers track, and kicked, they ran away from 3rd. Leader recorded 47.98 1st-800m, they ran good overall time here in 1-34.46. Third mare DANESIRI was checked on home turn then did rush home, she went well. GYPSY DIAMOND is not at her best, paddock, start again please.
The G1 was Race 6 and the speed was madness. PANZER DIVISION led in a staggering 1-11.55 1st-1200m, his first 1400m was 1-22.94, these would be great times on their own, the problem, there was 800/600m left to travel. It was a swoopers race and HAMPTON COURT had the last crack, gee it was a strong stying effort though, under pressure long way out (700m or so) and flat 400m out then ran over the top of FIRST SEAL and SWEYNESSE who looked a certain quinella mid-straight. The filly FIRST SEAL looked gone herself before the turn and responded, she still beat SWEYNESSE home and he had her ”cold” turning. PRESS REPORT chased the hot speed and held 4th, he thrashed the rest too. Time: 2.0.19
To put these times into persepctive, ORDER OF THE SUN led (hard) in Race 2 also over 2000m, his early 1200m split was 1-13.82 so PANZER DIVISION would have been around 14L in front of him with 800m to run… Wow!!!
ORDER OF THE SUN was strong by the way, GRAND MARSHALL was clearly second-best and BEST CASE, well, facy a strong 2000m, 3rd-up jumping in trip caught him out. They ran a fast 2.0.36.
THE FORGIVE FILE:
BROOKLYN (4-wide), FEAST FOR EYES (bad start), SEBRING SUN (good thing beaten), GOOD PROJECT (wide), GOLDEN ARO (covered ground), KING KAMADA (also was posted wide), SHOUT TO THE TOP (poor recovery), RIVA DE LAGO (back/ keen/ on-pace race), PANZER DIVISION (this was not the Oakleigh Plate), FOREVER CRAZY (checked key stage/ did hit line), CHINTZ (upside/ down) and DUKE ALBERT (wide).
