| DAVID GATELY on Leading up to Spring Carnival 2008 |
As the massive, and extended (thanks to E.I.) Sydney carnival wound down recently, the spotlight turns to Brisbane with the running of the time-honoured features: The Stradbroke Handicap, the Queensland Derby and The Brisbane Cup all looming large this long-weekend. The weather has been nasty of late in Brisbane and with 50mls of rain predicted before Saturday it has put a "dampener" on many leading contenders hopes!
As always at this time of year punters have one eye ahead to the Spring carnival in Melbourne which will be on us before we know it... Horses that performed well off limited preparations or only had short campaigns due to E.I. should be kept in the memory bank when looking at our feature doubles etc. The hunt for a future winner never stops!
For now though... we look forward to Group 1 racing in Brisbane, is Moatize (Derby hopeful) seasoned enough to win? Is he genuine? He reminds me of Toulouse Lautrec who was very raw and stepped out and won the QTC Derby brilliantly.
Can Casino Prince win a Stradbroke off a freshen at 1400m in the wet, off an average piece of trackwork between races last week? Suspect we need to look around him and find some value if looking for the winner... Time will tell... It's a great time of the year to have a bet for mine.
Good luck with 'em !
